How Co-ops work
How co-ops work:
How a typical homeschool co-op works is multiple families come together with a common educational goal. Parents meet to decide what they want to do, how they want to do it and who is best suited to do what. Everyone contributes either time or funds to make it happen.
The advantage of a co-op is it is completely customizable. If the families decide they only want to meet once or twice a week, they can. If they want to have guest speakers or specialized classes they can. Anything they want and have the resources to do is on the table. The down side is that everyone has a say, so there has to be communication and agreement. Typically as long as everyone has the same basic reason for being there, it’s kept simple and fair and not too demanding they work well for students and families.
The suggested format for this co-op is to get together in a home M,T,W & from 9-9:45 do the assigned math from their teacher plus any supplementation they want to do, take a 15 minute break, spend 10:00-10:45 doing language arts homework plus any supplementation, take a 15 minute break, spend 11:00-12:00 doing whatever electives each age group wants to do, then either go home or go to the park for lunch/PE/play. Then getting together for a couple of hours on a Thursday somewhere outdoors if possible.
Each student would need to bring a laptop or iPad to login to the school district’s online schooling page.
The ideal would be if parents take turns teaching so some days you’re teaching and some days you let someone else take over. In addition to the assigned core online classes home schooling can be a lot of fun & google, YouTube, Pintrest & many other resources make it relatively easy!
